PLAN YOUR TRIP

Know before
you go.

Practical guides for timing, getting around, staying, packing and making sense of Sri Lanka before you arrive.

YOUR JOURNEY STARTS HERE

A little planning.
A lot to look forward to.

Beach mornings, tea-country walks, ancient cities or a little of everything. Start with the essentials, then shape a route that leaves space to enjoy the island.

WHEN TO VISIT

One island.
Different seasons.

Choose a region alongside your dates. Sri Lanka’s monsoons affect different parts of the island, and the hills can feel very different from the coast.

DECEMBER–FEBRUARY

Northeast monsoon

The north and east receive monsoon rain. Compare south and west coast options, while checking the actual forecast.

MARCH–APRIL

First inter-monsoon

A transition period, with afternoon or evening showers possible. Keep outdoor days flexible.

MAY–SEPTEMBER

Southwest monsoon

Rain affects the southwest. Compare east-coast plans instead of applying one weather rule to the whole island.

OCTOBER–NOVEMBER

Second inter-monsoon

Showers can affect the island more widely. Allow room to adjust walks, beach days and transfers.

These are general climate patterns, not a forecast. Check the Department of Meteorology for your dates and marine conditions.

GETTING AROUND

The journey is
part of the trip.

Ella railway station in Sri Lanka’s hill country

A driver, with room to pause.

A private driver can suit a route with several bases or luggage-heavy transfers. Agree the itinerary, vehicle and inclusions before booking.

A train for the landscape.

Choose a rail section because it fits your journey. Confirm services and tickets separately, with time for station transfers and possible delays.

Local transport, at your pace.

Buses and tuk-tuks can work for suitable journeys. Check the route or total fare first and keep long transfer days realistic.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

Arrive with the basics sorted.

A short checklist is easier to use than a long packing list. Check requirements close to departure and keep essential details accessible.

Before you fly

Check official entry requirements for your nationality, keep accommodation and transfer details handy, and review your travel documents.

For everyday travel

Plan access to local currency and connectivity. Carry light clothing, rain protection and a warmer layer if your route includes the hills.

For places of worship

Bring a modest layer and follow each site’s footwear and photography rules. Leave space for worshippers and ask before photographing people.

WHERE TO STAY

Choose the place.
Then choose the stay.

A beach hotel, town guesthouse or hill-country retreat can each work well. The right base starts with the location and the days you want to have.

Check the actual address.

A familiar destination name can cover a wide area. Compare transfers to the beach, trailhead, station or park gate you will actually use.

Balance atmosphere and access.

A quieter setting may mean extra travel for meals or outings. A central base can make a short stay easier.

Give each base enough time.

Allow an arrival afternoon and a proper day to explore before moving on. Compare fewer bases before adding another hotel change.

TRAVEL THOUGHTFULLY

Take good memories.
Leave room for others.

Choose local businesses where possible, reduce waste and respect daily life around you. At natural sites, follow permitted routes and leave plants and animals untouched.

For wildlife outings, choose operators who keep their distance, avoid feeding or chasing animals, and follow park guidance.
